Welcome to the Kitchen Garden

      Tuck Shop Program

As a child, foraging for berries and nuts on the commons and parks was a natural part of growing up. My mother’s garden is a magical place where I learnt to grow, harvest and respect nature. To me a bountiful and herbal Kitchen Garden consisting of a wildflower patch, a sunflower border and brightly colored fruits and vegetables poking out from under a lush green leaf is as natural as the seasons themselves.      -- Emma Novashinski, Kitchen Garden Program Director

The Kitchen Garden Program was born from a desire to provide a source of local and all-natural food prepared for children.

Getting back in touch with nature, learning about your environment and what you can do to keep it healthy, in turn creates good wholesome natural foods.

It is every person’s right to have access to unmodified, fresh food.  The types of foods that fill you up, make you feel good, and allow you to thrive.

How to grow it, when to pick it.    All children at New Century will be involved in the growing and preparation of food.   Snacks for the school, when possible, will come from our green house.   The school lunch program, which is optional, will make maximum use of the food grown in the greenhouse throughout the growing season.

The fee for lunch is $90 per month, due the month before the lunch service (to help us with our planning).   For an average price of $4.50 per lunch, your child will get a nutritious meal that he or she had a hand in creating.
